Developing Defencemen – Webinar Series
With hockey being put on pause for the next while, Jets Hockey Development has taken their programming virtual. This is a great opportunity for players to continue to learn the importance of understanding the game and where they can apply topics to their own game. Even though practices and games have been paused, this does not mean you cannot improve as a player.
Sessions will cover in detail:
Session 1 (DEC 1 6:30-7:30 pm) – Individual Skills
This session will cover the importance of individual skill and working to expand existing skill sets. D men need to be among the most skilled players on the team with skating as they must be able to go as fast backwards as the other players go forwards. The need to handle the puck and make good plays under pressure and can create offense from the blue or by joining the rush. We will examine Puck Retrievals in this session to illustrate skating, puck handling and passing skills.
Session 2 (DEC 8 – 6:30-7:30 pm) – Supporting Your Partner
This session will cover in detail the ability to recognize space in all 3 zones (defensive zone, neutral zone, offensive zone) and how to effectively support your partner. We will also work through how to be a passing option or how to help your partner with communication.
Session 3 (DEC 15 – 6:30-7:30 pm) – Creating Offense
This session will work through how to effectively contribute to the offensive side of the game. This can be done from the offensive blue line by understanding your options when you get the puck, getting shots through when you get a shooting lane, finding sticks when you can shoot for deflections, or even making good decisions when shooting lanes are not there. We will also show how you can join the rush to be a late player entering the zone which becomes very hard to defend against.
